While still a young specialist, her achievements in the prevention and treatment of trachoma, which at that time was widespread in Azerbaijan, made an invaluable theoretical and practical contribution to this field of ophthalmology in Azerbaijan. In the post-Soviet era, she became known for her studies of professional pathologies of the visual organ.
Studies of eye diseases associated with harmful working conditions in the rich research activities of Zarifa Aliyeva were associated with the Institute of Physiology named after academician Abdulla Garaev of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. In 1979, on the basis of a joint decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Health, the Laboratory of Vision Physiology was established at the institute under the guidance of Honored Scientist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, academician Zarifa Aliyeva. With the creation of this laboratory, a new page has opened not only in the scientific activities of the institute, but also in the development of the national school of ophthalmology. The research institute began to study the physiological and clinical aspects of the effects of low-toxic products on the organs of vision of workers and employees of the Baku factory of household air conditioners and a number of chemical plants, and important results were obtained for the new field of ophthalmology.
According to the results of scientific research, several monographs were published, including “Professional eye pathology in the manufacture of tires”, “Ophthalmology associated with chronic iodine intoxication”, “Prevention of occupational eye diseases in the iodine industry”, which were highly appreciated by the world scientific community. Rare scientific works, such as “Therapeutic ophthalmology”, “Fundamentals of iridology”, played a special role in recognizing her as an innovative researcher.
In 1981, academician Zarifa Aliyev was awarded the highest award in the field of ophthalmology - the prize named after M.I. Averbakh of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences for her great contribution to the development of ophthalmology and for scientific research in the field of professional pathology of the organ of vision.
