Academician Irada Huseynova, vice-president of ANAS, head of the Division of Biological and Medical Sciences, director of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), spoke at the opening ceremony of the first international online conference on the theme “Human Genetics and Genetic Diseases: Problems and Development Prospects” organized by Azerbaijan Medical University.

Academician I. Huseynova noted that genetic diseases caused by the human genome, human genetics and various pathological processes remain relevant problems of our time. Infectious microbial diseases Spanish flu, anthrax, jaundice, malaria, plague, bird flu (H1N1b), Ebola, HIV (AIDS), MERS, SARS COV-1, including COVID-19, which spread rapidly in the last century and led to great casualties, showed that there are serious problems in the field of medicine and health. The scientist noted that the sciences of molecular biology and genetics bear a great responsibility for overcoming these problems.

“Given all this, genetic research is one of the priority areas of research identified by the Department of Medical Sciences and approved by the Presidium of ANAS,” I. Huseynova said and provided information on the research work carried out in these fields at the IMBB, the Institute of Genetic Resources and the Institute of Physiology.

She added that the program of scientific events prepared for the post-pandemic period in ANAS under the guidance of academician Ramiz Mehdiyev includes genetic studies in connection with coronavirus and other infectious diseases, as well as the population of Azerbaijan and human health.

Stressing the relevance of the conference from the point of view of popularizing the achievements of medical and genetic science in Azerbaijan, academician I. Huseynova wished success to the work of the event.
