15.04.2020 / Anniversaries April 15 is a memorial day of the outstanding ophthalmologist and scientist academician Zarifa Aliyeva

35 years have passed since the death of the world famous ophthalmologist, academician Zarifa Aliyeva.

Zarifa Aziz kizy Aliyeva was born on April 28, 1923 in the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic. In 1947 she graduated from the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute named after N. Narimanov. At first she worked as a researcher at the Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute of Ophthalmology, and since 1969 at the Azerbaijan Institute of Advanced Medical Studies named after A. Aliyev she was an assistant professor of the Eye Diseases department, professor, and then head of the Department of Ophthalmology (1982-1985)

Academician Zarifa Aliyeva made an exceptional contribution to the development of ophthalmology in Azerbaijan. While still a young specialist, her achievements in the prevention and treatment of trachoma, which at that time was widespread in Azerbaijan, made an invaluable theoretical and practical contribution to this field of ophthalmology in Azerbaijan. In the post-Soviet era, she became known for her studies of professional pathologies of the visual organ.

Studies of eye diseases associated with harmful working conditions in the rich research activities of Zarifa Aliyeva were associated with the Institute of Physiology named after academician Abdulla Garaev of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan. In 1979, on the basis of a joint decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Health, the Laboratory of Vision Physiology was established at the institute under the guidance of Honored Scientist, Doctor of Medical Sciences, academician Zarifa Aliyeva. With the creation of this laboratory, a new page has opened not only in the scientific activities of the institute, but also in the development of the national school of ophthalmology. The research institute began to study the physiological and clinical aspects of the effects of low-toxic products on the organs of vision of workers and employees of the Baku factory of household air conditioners and a number of chemical plants, and important results were obtained for the new field of ophthalmology.

According to the results of scientific research, several monographs were published, including “Professional eye pathology in the manufacture of tires”, “Ophthalmology associated with chronic iodine intoxication”, “Prevention of occupational eye diseases in the iodine industry”, which were highly appreciated by the world scientific community. Rare scientific works, such as “Therapeutic ophthalmology”, “Fundamentals of iridology”, played a special role in recognizing her as an innovative researcher.

In 1981, academician Zarifa Aliyev was awarded the highest award in the field of ophthalmology - the prize named after M.I. Averbakh of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences for her great contribution to the development of ophthalmology and for scientific research in the field of professional pathology of the organ of vision.

Academician Zarifa Aliyeva was a member of the Presidium of the All-Union Society of Ophthalmologists, the Soviet Committee for Peace, the Board of the Azerbaijan Society of Ophthalmologists and the editors of the journal Vestnik of Ophthalmology (Moscow).

Employees of the Institute of Physiology do not forget to honor the memory of the great scientist Zarifa Aliyeva.
